I often find myself in conversations with developers on Experts Exchange, blogs or forums saying, “Generally speaking…blah, blah, blah.”  Where blah, blah, blah is replaced by general rules of thumb in regards to development. This is an index of "Generally Speaking..." entries that will provide an easy link for me to point to and of course supplement my poor memory.

As always this is in regards to the common business application.

Generally speaking...

 - The best software is never written 

- Write something down 
 - Practice, practice, practice 

- It is not about how fast you can get something done 
 - No spaghetti or balls of mud 

- There are at least 3 layers to every application 

- Favor theory over rules 
 - Programming a computer is easy 
 - Everyone writes hacks 
 - Business-Object-Oriented should be standard operating procedure 
 - Make the user more effective
